Le Grand High School softball players travel to the State Capital

What is a “three-peat”? It is the act of winning three championships in a row, a rare and difficult task. The Lady Bulldogs softball team from Le Grand High School earned this rare title in May of 2009 by pocketing the Sac-Joaquin Section title for the third year in a row. The hard work and effort these ladies put into their season did not go unnoticed. On September 9, the 2009 softball team traveled to Sacramento for a tour of the State Capital. Eleven girls from the team attended including Megan Tilton, Megan Thiel, Kayleigh Haas, Jessica Fausone, Presley Ringeisen, Monica Manzo, Sonya Manzo, Monica Garcia, Veronica Moreno, Jasmin Flores, and Melissa Garcia. Coach Gia Priddell also attended along with 3 parents. When they arrived early that morning, the team was allowed to go onto the Senate floor to get an up close look at our state government. They were then allowed to sit in on a session where they were introduced by Senator Jeff Denham and were welcomed with a round of applause from the senators. After the session the girls were then led into Senator Denham’s office to receive a proclamation for their success. The proclamation is a great honor that not a lot of people can say they have received. “It was neat to be able to be on the floor and see all the senators,” commented 1st basemen Megan Tilton, “I thought the tour was a lot of fun, I learned a lot.” Tilton and her fellow teammates walked through the Capital with a tour guide, they learned about California’s history and interesting facts about the government. Tilton added, “It was a day to remember!”
The Lady Bulldogs earned their three-peat title on May 16, 2009 when they played against the Waterford Wildcats for the championship. “For the whole year we battled 2 teams neck and neck,” stated Head Coach Gia Priddell, “we swept Mariposa in season, we lost to Waterford twice and beat them once. When playoffs arrived it came down to us 3 teams.” And the Bulldogs didn’t back down; that morning they played their arch-rivals the Mariposa Grizzlies in the semi-finals and came out with a 2-0 win. They then went on to the championship game and battled hard. “From the time we stepped on the field to the time we stepped off, we came ready to play.” Priddell commented, “A few key hits put us ahead and that was all we needed. I knew before the game started that it was ours. We made history!” Congratulations Lady Bulldogs! You earned it!
